Battery Engineer

Summary/Objective

The Battery Engineer at Roccor is responsible for the architecture, design, analysis, test, and verification of electrical battery systems for spacecraft of all sizes and applications. The battery engineer serves as the key technical point of contact to industry partners which operate on the cutting edge of battery cell technology.

Essential Functions

  • Conducts industry surveys of battery cell technologies, understanding technical advantages and limitations for applications in spacecraft.
  • Develops battery assembly designs and models for use in predicting power supply performance through spacecraft orbital trajectories and spacecraft on-orbit life.
  • Generates battery component selection and battery system designs through trade studies.
  • Decomposes system level requirements and key performance criteria to the battery system and associated battery components.
  • Identifies, develops, and executes risk mitigation plans to aid in the design of battery subsystems.
  • Develops and facilitates the execution of verification plans and reports, including analysis and testing to demonstrate compliance to requirements.
  • Develops subcontractor statement of work and provides technical oversight to subcontractors through product development phases.
  • Prepares and participates in proposal development for technical feasibility and cost assessments.
  • Supports the development and maintenance of electrical power systems technology and product roadmaps.

Required Competencies

  • Engineering Principles: *Knowledge of the fundamental principles electrical energy storage devices, analog and digital electronics, and electrical power systems.
  • Engineering Methods: Capable of generating and/or utilizing engineering models, trade studies to facilitate technical selection of battery solutions against necessary requirements.
  • Hardware Development: Experience with battery design, prototyping, testing, and manufacturing processes.
  • Space Environments: *Experience with programmatic, quality, reliability, and technical space flight hardware requirements associated with the design for demanding launch and space environments.
  • Verification Methods: Knowledge of electrical battery verification techniques and methods for demonstrating compliance to requirements.
  • Decision Making: Autonomously facilitates the decision-making process to progress actions and tasks towards meeting aggressive milestones, deliverables and cost targets.
  • Complex Problem Solving: Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Communication: Capable of facilitating verbal and written communication with all levels of a small business organization. Able to clearly present and facilitate complex interactions demanded by hardware development.

Preferred Competencies

  • Spacecraft Integration: Preferred candidates have experience successfully managing a spacecraft integration project through the processes of design, qualification, assembly and test, launch integration and support, and in-orbit operations.
  • Systems Discipline: Capable of identifying and managing indicators of system performance and the actions need to improve or correct performance, relative to the goals of the system. Manages design decisions with the focus of maturing the overall system balance between cost, complexity, technical compliance, and schedule.
  • Range Safety: Experience with US launch range safety requirements and verification associated with electrical energy storage devices.

    Test Engineer

    The Test Engineer interfaces with all functions of engineering as well as program management to aid in coordinating testing efforts for product development and program deliverables. They provide support to design and concepts and prototyping teams to developed test setups for initial functionality demonstration and evaluation. They ensure that proper methods and detail are being applied for a products maturity, and that program reviews are efficient and timely. They develop testing plans that address a given programs requirements and model verification as well as risk mitigation needs. They develop internal protocols and best practice standards to help guide testing efforts at the material coupon level, component and sub system level, and system qualification level at Roccor. Senior level candidates will also provide technical leadership and review at critical stage gates of a program’s development and advise systems engineering and design teams of appropriate levels of testing for program reviews.

    • Development and management of high value program testing plans
    • Identify testing methods, develop test plan, and design test fixtures for risk mitigation, requirements verification and/or validation, and prototype development and demonstration needs

    Requirements

    Required Competencies

    • Structural Testing: ASTM Material Testing, metrology and loading techniques for structures in the lab and at vendor or customer sites
    • Environmental Testing: Capable of overseeing and processing data from environmental tests such as random vibration, static loading, and thermal-vacuum testing.
    • Metrology and Data Acquisition: Use of a variety of manual and electronic equipment in the test lab to measure loads, dimensions, displacements, electrical parameters, etc.
    • Familiarity with Classical and Computational Analysis: Ability to utilize standard calculation techniques to interpret and validate FE predictions and testing results.
    • Planning: Development of test plan schedule to meet program needs on time
    • Documentation Generation and Review: Generate and/or review fabrication, test, and quality assurance documentation and vendor specifications. Roccor is a AS9100 certified company and proper documentation is important to maintaining this certification.
    • Adaptability: Comfortable performing a variety of tasks throughout the multiple engineering disciplines at Roccor.
    • Collaboration: Ability to listen, communicate, and collaborate with product team, managers, and team lead.

    • Space and deployable structures: Background in space, small satellites, and deployable structures

Responsible for setting up, checking, and operating equipment while adhering to pre-established guidelines and specifications.       Composite Technician

      Summary/Objective

      Roccor is looking for a Composite Technician who will perform critical tasks to manufacture cutting edge space craft using a multitude of different prepreg materials, bonding adhesives, and aerospace coatings. A Composite Technician at Roccor assists engineers in the manufacture of components, equipment, and machinery. May help prepare proposals and cost estimates by estimating workload to establish completion dates. Relies on extensive experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Works under limited supervision. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is required.
